Four crowns, two unbeatens, one open question that the bracket answered in the cruelest way available: the rubber match might not wait for Miami.
The crowns
SEC: Oklahoma 23, Texas A&M 21. Bawce announced the game his way — "tune in to watch Stew get his ass beat lol" — and then came within a field goal of delivering. The king survived, took his first SEC crown since Season Two, and Bawce's "Good game" afterward read like a man who knows he just played the round of his life and still watched the trophy leave. Two points. That's the whole margin between the No. 1 seed and chaos.
B1G: Oregon 24, Penn State 14. One week after States hung 44-21 on Oregon in the regular-season finale, the rematch went the other way — "Oregon vs PSU again," States posted, and again turned out to be the operative word. Bowzer's answer game gave him the conference title and the 5-seed; States still banked the 4-seed and a bye, which is the quietest good outcome of championship weekend.
Big 12: TCU 45, Arizona State 14. The most emphatic result of the weekend. KJ went back-to-back on Big 12 crowns, finished the run 13-0, and put 45 on the same TBO team he beat in the Week 8 Game of the Week. And for all of that, the committee handed him... the 9-seed. More on that crime below.
ACC: Florida State over Clemson, on a forfeit. The crown counts — that's the league rule, same as it ever was — and it makes Quan a conference champion in his first full season with the new team. The game itself is exempt from every record, and Clemson still drew the 3-seed and a bye. It's the second straight season LT's playoff path has a forfeit in it. Last year it knocked him out of a 13-0 season; this year it cost him a trophy without costing him position.
The field: twelve teams, one collision course
The full bracket, first round on the left:
- 12 New Mexico at 5 Oregon — the CPU auto-qualifier (12-1, ranked 19th) draws Bowzer, with 4-seed Penn State waiting in the Rose Bowl quarterfinal. Last season's UAB role, recast.
- 9 TCU at 8 Ole Miss — an unbeaten, 13-0, back-to-back conference champion, seeded ninth and sent on the road... to the defending national champion, at 11-1. This is the round-one game of the decade, and whoever survives it gets No. 1 Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl.
- 11 Florida State at 6 Michigan — Quan's ACC champs at Dre's Michigan, winner to face 3-seed Clemson in the Fiesta.
- 10 Nebraska at 7 Tennessee — JT's first career playoff game, in Knoxville, against the coach who turned Neyland into a fortress this season. The winner gets unbeaten Notre Dame in the Peach.
Read that TCU-Ole Miss line again, because the bracket buried its lede: if the champ survives the unbeaten Frogs, Stew-Pat III arrives in the quarterfinal. The series is one apiece across two seasons — Pat's sweep and ring last year, Stew's 38-20 answer in Week 11 — and the committee just scheduled the rubber match two rounds before anyone wanted it. One of the two best coaches in the league is not making the Final Four.
The stakes, restated
Tayne's Notre Dame is the only bye team without a ring case on the line — his 12-0 is the cleanest résumé in the field and the CK Rankings board has him one thin line behind the champ. LT gets a third crack at the bracket that has ended him twice in title games. States and Bowzer split their two meetings a week apart and could see each other a third time in the semis. And the belt math looms over all of it: Stew wins it all and the race goes 3-1 with the argument basically over; Pat repeats and it's 2-2 at the halfway-to-halfway mark; anybody else wins and the belt conversation gains a third voice.
One more storm cloud, courtesy of the champ himself: Pat posted his coach-management screen — OC Mike Norvell and DC Pete Golding, both A+ rated, both with one year remaining — captioned "Was fun while it lasted." The staff-poaching era is coming for Oxford right as the defense of the crown gets serious.
Bowl Week 1 chats are made. The bracket is live on the site as results land. Miami is waiting.
Conference title scores from the Sheet; bracket and seeds from the in-game playoff screen. The forfeited ACC final is exempt from all records; the crown stands, per league rule.
