CK Rankings: The Answer Edition

Held by rule, now held by receipts: Stew beats the champ by eighteen and removes the asterisk. Tayne stays perfect at No. 3, KJ and LT surge, and the top two are one apiece on the series that decides everything.

The Norman Edition ended on a loaded sentence: for the first time, No. 1 was "held by rule rather than by fear." Stew apparently read it.

Oklahoma 38, Ole Miss 20. The two-time champ against the reigning champ, and it wasn't close after halftime. Add the 34-3 dismantling of South Carolina and the king's answer to the worst month of his career is a 2-1 stretch with the two most convincing wins anybody has posted on a contender. The rule still holds the chair — two rings against everybody else's one or none — but as of Week 11, the rule has backup.

No. 1

Stew — Oklahoma. The last edition put an asterisk on the throne. Consider it removed. Beating Pat 38-20 is the exact result the résumé needed: his first win over the champ since Season Two, at stakes, by three scores. The Norman loss to JT still sits in the file — nothing on this board gets erased — but the question that edition asked ("what does Stew do about it?") now has an answer with a date on it. Two rings, and the best win of Season Four. The chair is his by every measure again.

No. 2

Pat — Ole Miss. First loss of the defense, and it came to the one coach the board ranks above him — which is exactly what the board predicted and exactly what Pat can't afford in a bracket. Everything else holds: the ring, 2-1 against users this season, and the season series with Oklahoma now sitting at one apiece across two seasons of pure venom. If these two meet in the playoffs, it will be the biggest game in league history. The board is patient. So is he, presumably.

No. 3

Tayne — Notre Dame. The only unbeaten contender left: 4-0 in played games, with wins over Jason, Work, Harry, and Quan. The two spotlight road wins still anchor the case, and Week 11's 35-28 survival of a hot Florida State team is the kind of unglamorous win that playoff seasons are made of. The gap between No. 2 and No. 3 has never been thinner. A Tayne-Pat playoff game would settle an argument this board has been having with itself for a month.

The Bridesmaids

LT — Clemson is the tier's arrow up, and it's emphatic: 42-7 over Florida State, 55-14 over Miami, 128-28 combined in a three-game run. Two title-game losses still headline the résumé; this is the first stretch since that reads like a coach planning a third trip with a different ending. Dre — Michigan matched him in style points — 37-7 over Frank, then a 24-0 shutout of Curt in The Game itself. Bowzer — Oregon played once and it was a 35-0 shutout of Gooch; the Tampa runner-up's machine appears fully assembled. States — Penn State banked the Rivalry Week win over Curt to go 2-0.

The Climb

KJ — TCU is the riser of the edition: a Game of the Week win over TBO in the "top 15 matchup," a 41-25 handling of Bhog, and the #big-games desk's verdict — "alone atop the BIG 12." Last year's conference trophy plus this year's start is a top-tier résumé forming in real time. Purp — Tennessee survived the 53-50 dawg fight and remains the most dangerous out in the field. JT — Nebraska holds exactly where Norman put him — he didn't play a counting game this stretch, so the file neither grew nor shrank. Curt — Ohio State takes the tier's hardest fall: 24-21 to States, 24-0 to Dre, and a season line of 1-4 in user play. Lute — Miami split four ways this stretch and is trending the wrong one; TBO — Arizona State lost the spotlight game; Ice Man — Georgia finally has a signature — the 25-19 GOTW win over Alabama — sandwiched by three losses; and Jason — Alabama is 0-2 with the #big-games desk narrating his seat temperature.

Proving Ground

Work — Texas quietly won the tier: 31-19 over Ice Man and the 42-39 Lone Star thriller over Bawce ("Gritty win last night" — the admin desk). Quan — Florida State lived a whole career in seven weeks: a Rivalry Week statement over Lute, then 42-7 and 35-28 defeats to LT and Tayne. Bawce — Texas A&M and ZBO — SMU both sit at two real wins. Thrash — South Carolina ran into the king and the Aggies back-to-back. Harry — Georgia Tech debuts on the board after the standard initiation — 0-3 against ZBO, Lute, and Tayne, with the SMU game a six-point near-miss. Newcomers start low. Norman is proof of where they can go.

The Basement

Frank — Washington, Gooch — Indiana (shut out 35-0, blown out 42-6), Bhog — BYU, Cozy — Baylor, Teeric — USC, and Lux — Cal hold. Four names came off this board entirely this month — TV, Polo, Fields, and Cell all left the league — and four open programs are waiting to mint the next Norman story.

That's the board through Season 4, Week 13. The belt race is still 2-1 Stew. The season series between the top two lines is one apiece across two seasons — and if the bracket gives us the rubber match, this board finally gets its answer too.
